Real conservatives, conservatives who believe in the libertarian tenets of the Founding Fathers, believe that we the people must be protected from government. Hence, our Constitution has ten enumerated amendments that do just that: put limits on what the government cannot do to it's citizens.

Well, here you have a fine example of one of those "real conservatives":

Foley resigns from Congress over e-mails

Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record), R-Fla., abruptly resigned from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former teenage male page.

"I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent," he said in a statement issued by his office.

His departure sent Republicans scrambling for a replacement candidate less than six weeks before midterm elections in which Democrats are making a strong bid to gain control of the House.

Foley's two-sentence statement gave no reason for Foley's decision to abandon a flourishing career in Congress. But several officials said the resignation had been prompted by the e-mails, and he took his action as fresh details emerged about electronic messages he had sent.

Foley, 52, had been a shoo-in for a new term until the e-mail correspondence surfaced in recent days.

His resignation further complicates the political landscape for Republicans, who are fighting to retain control of Congress. Democrats need to win a net of 15 Republican seats to regain the power they lost in 1994.

Florida Republicans planned to meet as soon as Monday to name a replacement in Foley's district, which President Bush won with 55 percent in 2004 and is now in play for November. Though Florida ballots have already been printed with Foley's name and cannot be changed, any votes for Foley will count toward the party's choice.

Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.

The page worked for Rep. Rodney Alexander (news, bio, voting record), R-La., who said Friday that when he learned of the e-mail exchanges 10 to 11 months ago, he called the teen's parents. Alexander told the Ruston Daily Leader, "We also notified the House leadership that there might be a potential problem," a reference to the House's Republican leaders.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Friday he had asked the chairman of the House's page board, Rep. John Shimkus (news, bio, voting record), R-Ill., to investigate the page system. "We want to make sure that all our pages are safe and the page system is safe," Hastert said.

He said Foley submitted the letter of resignation to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and submitted a copy to him. A House clerk read Foley's resignation on the House floor.

"He's done the right thing," Hastert said. Asked if the chain of events was disturbing, he said, "None of us are very happy about it."

ABC News reported Friday that Foley also engaged in a series of sexually explicit instant messages with current and former teenage male pages. In one message, ABC said, Foley wrote to one page: "Do I make you a little horny?"

In another message, Foley wrote, "You in your boxers, too? ... Well, strip down and get naked."

Foley, as chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, had introduced legislation in July to protect children from exploitation by adults over the Internet. He also sponsored other legislation designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect.

Please, read that last paragraph one more time, its priceless.

Yet, in that country, a bunch of cowards have given Bush and his henchmen permission to go around the world torturing people.

There is many who reject this bizarre decision by the US to twist the law in order to allow members of its military and its "intelligence" agencies to torture anyone they want.

UN investigator fears abuse with new U.S. law

The U.N. torture investigator charged on Friday that a new U.S. law for tough interrogation of terrorism suspects would deprive people of the right to a fair trial before independent courts and could lead to mistreatment.

Manfred Nowak, United Nations special rapporteur on torture, regretted that the bill ignored U.N. rights bodies which have said U.S. interrogation methods and prolonged detentions violate international law.

The Senate gave final approval on Thursday to the bill, a day after its passage by the House of Representatives. President George W. Bush is expected to sign it into law very soon.

"I am afraid that with the new law, the interrogation methods will not really change. Bush has said that harsh interrogation methods will continue and that is my concern," the Austrian law professor told Reuters in a telephone interview.

The U.N. Committee against Torture and the U.N. Human Rights Committee have found the U.S. interrogation methods are unlawful and expressed concern at arbitrary detentions.

"The bill does not take into account substantive criticism from our side ... It is not the signal that I would have expected the U.S. government and Congress would make in order to try to comply with our recommendations," Nowak said.

The bill sets standards for interrogating suspects, but with complex rules that rights groups say could allow techniques that border on torture such as sleep deprivation.

Bush got much of what he wanted in the bill to continue the once-secret Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) program of detention and aggressive interrogations of suspects.

It establishes military tribunals that would allow some use of evidence obtained by coercion, but would give defendants access to classified evidence being used to convict them.

RIGHT TO FAIR TRIAL

"These people must have a right to fair trial before an independent court which in principle should be an ordinary court. I am particularly concerned that with the bill, the habeas corpus rights are further reduced," Nowak said.

Habeas corpus refers to a person's right to go before an independent judge who rules on the legality of the detention.

"This is one of the most regressive pieces of legislation in U.S. history," Reed Brody, legal counsel at the New York-based group Human Rights Watch, told Reuters.

A landmark Supreme Court ruling last June struck down Bush's first military commissions to try suspects, leaving the process in limbo. There have been no successful prosecutions since the September 11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people in 2001.

The bill expands the definition of "enemy combatants" mostly held at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to include those who provide arms, money and other aid to terrorist groups.

"The Bush administration has been given authority to determine who is an enemy combatant and to lock people up on its own say-so indefinitely without trial," Brody said.

"We would have thought that after Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib and secret prisons, the administration would have learned mistreatment and torture do not make the country safer against terrorism, but in fact render it more vulnerable," he added.

The International Commission of Jurists said the law put inmates at Guantanamo and elsewhere "back in a legal black hole."
"It is terrible to say the least for the detainees and rule of law in the United States, but also a dangerous precedent because it undermines international human rights law standards," said Gerald Staberock, head of the ICJ's global security program.

I wonder how many Latin American immigrants will be tortured under this new legislation.

Well, now there is a report that indicates that Israel refused to provide the UN with the info necessary to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

Israel refused to give a U.N.-appointed investigation access to the officials who may have been responsible for the bombing of an observation post that killed four unarmed peacekeepers at the height of the conflict with Hezbollah, the United Nations said Friday.

Israel said the bombing of the U.N. peacekeeping post along the Israeli-Lebanese border was a mistake that occurred at the "operational level." The U.N. panel investigating the killings was not allowed to interview commanders at that level to determine what happened, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The statement was delivered shortly after the Board of Inquiry investigating the attack submitted a confidential report with its findings to the U.N. and to the four nations whose observers were killed — Austria, Canada, China and Finland. The report was not sent to Israel.

Dujarric's statement said it concluded that there was nothing else the United Nations could have done "that would have changed the outcome."

The four observers were killed by an Israeli precision-guided bomb that destroyed the bunker where they took shelter after their observation post near the town of Khiam came under heavy fire. U.N. officials in New York and Lebanon had repeatedly warned Israel that the observation post, built 30 years before, was under attack.

Because of Israel's refusal, the inquiry was "unable to determine why the attacks on the U.N. position were not halted despite repeated demarches to the Israeli authorities from U.N. personnel, both in the field and at headquarters," Dujarric said.

Israel has blamed inaccurate maps for its mistake, and said the airplane that dropped the bomb thought it was targeting Hezbollah. Hezbollah was active in the area, with a post about 150 yards away.

Asked to comment on Dujarric's statement, the spokeswoman for Israel's U.N. mission, Anat Friedman, said: "Israel has expressed its regret for the unfortunate event and has investigated the tragic incident."

Friedman refused to comment on the U.N. claim that the investigators had not been allowed to interview some officials.

A U.N. official said Israel never sufficiently explained why it kept bombing the base.

"We do not have a satisfactory answer as to why those attempts failed," said the official, who spoke anonymously because the report was confidential. "The Israelis are fully aware of our position on this incident."

The official said there was nothing in the Board of Inquiry's findings to contradict U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's earlier claim that the attack was "apparently deliberate."

They call their crime an error, and then they blame their error on a map.

If you follow the link you will figure out that I got it at Yahoo News (just like all the other pictures I post here), meaning, the MSN is indeed covering the incident at the oil refinery. Oh, and by the way, the two letters right before the word Photo on the caption stand for Associated Press, and well, you can not go more MSM than the Associated Press.

So there you go, Val was caught spilling his Gusano propaganda once again.

Oh wait, he does not want to be compared to a Nazi because liberals and leftists always call his ilk by that term, but since I do not know who was in charge of the propaganda machinery under Fulgencio Batista, the Goebbels comparison stands.

On a related note, I bet Gusanos are giddily happy about the new law that green lights the brave and democratic practice of torture by the US. This means that torture will be carried out in Cuba, at a place called Guantanamo, ilegally occupied by you know who.

Israel lifted its sea blockade of Lebanon on Friday, ending the country's two months of isolation as the task of preventing the entry of Hezbollah weapons falls to international warships patrolling offshore.

In a further boost to peace efforts, Israel also said it plans to pull the last of its troops out of Lebanon within two weeks.

The sea blockade's end, which came a day after Israel dropped its restrictions on air travel into Lebanon, lifts a barrier that has stifled Lebanon and cost the country tens of millions of dollars as it tries to rebuild from the devastating 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah.

"The blockade has seriously undermined the Lebanese economy and it is high time for it to end so as to allow the people to get back to their business," Maj. Gen. Alain Pellegrini, commander of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon, said.

Even before the formal announcement, a Lebanese cargo ship docked at Beirut's port, carrying industrial raw materials, ceramic tiles and appliances — the first commercial ship to land since the war began July 12.

Lebanon's resumption of control over its sea and skies was the latest boost in implementing the U.N.-brokered cease-fire that began Aug. 14.

The focus now shifts to the complicated process of withdrawing Israeli troops from southern Lebanon and replacing them with 15,000 Lebanese soldiers and a similar number of U.N. peacekeepers who are to maintain a border buffer zone free of Hezbollah weapons.

Israel has been gradually pulling out its soldiers — whose number peaked at 30,000 at the war's end — as international replacements move into place.

It remains to be seen if Israel's move will hold or if it is one more of their many lies and deceptions.

At least 10 Florida journalists received regular payments from a U.S. government program aimed at undermining the Cuban government of Fidel Castro, The Miami Herald reported on Friday.

Total payments since 2001 ranged from $1,550 to $174,753 per journalist, according to the newspaper, which said it found no instance in which those involved had disclosed that they were being paid by the U.S. Office of Cuba Broadcasting.

That office runs Radio and TV Marti, U.S. government programs broadcast to Cuba to promote democracy and freedom on the communist island. Its programming cannot be broadcast within the United States because of anti-propaganda laws.

The Cuban government has long contended that some Spanish-language journalists in Miami were on the U.S. government payroll.

The Herald said two of the journalists receiving the payments worked for its Spanish-language sister publication, El Nuevo Herald, and a third was a freelance contributor for that newspaper, which fired all three after learning of the payments.

Journalism ethics experts called the payments a fundamental conflict of interest that undermines the credibility of reporters meant to objectively cover issues affecting U.S. policy toward Cuba.

They compared it to the case of Armstrong Williams in 2005, when it was revealed that the Bush administration had paid the prominent conservative pundit to promote its education policy, No Child Left Behind, on his nationally syndicated television show.

Jesus Diaz Jr., president of the Miami Herald Media Co. and publisher of both newspapers, said the payments violated a sacred trust between journalists and the public.

"I personally don't believe that integrity and objectivity can be assured if any of our reporters receive monetary compensation from any entity that he or she may cover or have covered, but particularly if it's a government agency," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

The other seven journalists worked for Spanish-language television and radio stations and newspapers in the Miami area. They reported for their organizations on topics ranging from Cuban culture to exile politics and U.S.-Cuban relations. Many appeared as guests or hosts on TV Marti and Radio Marti programs, the Miami Herald said.

Pedro Roig, director of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting since 2003, said he had sought to improve the quality of news by, among other things, hiring more Cuban exile journalists as contractors. He told the newspaper it was the journalists' responsibility to adhere to their own ethics and rules.

One has to wonder how many gusano bloggers like Val Prieto are on the same payroll.

Also, how about that paragraph that mentions that an US funded news outlet breaks its country own laws, reason why the broadcast can not be heard in the "land of the free and home of the brave"?

About 100 people marched through downtown Palm Springs on Thursday night to demonstrate against what protesters said was anti-Latino hate speech and intimidation at a store that sells Latino books and crafts.

Two men entered Latino Books y Mas in Palm Springs on July 5 with video cameras and confronted the principal owner of the store, Tonia Bustamante-Ramirez, because she sells books and posters featuring Mexican revolutionary heroes Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, and Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara.

Bustamante-Ramirez said the two men's remarks and questions were intimidating, and the video was posted two days later on the Web site YouTube, on which users can post self-made videos. As of Thursday afternoon, nearly 1,400 people had viewed at least part of the video, which is nearly seven minutes long.

Bustamante-Ramirez said she was so traumatized by the incident that she did not return to the store until Thursday night. Her husband had opened the shop twice for a few hours since July 5, but otherwise it had remained closed, she said.

"I fear for my safety," she said.

Bustamante-Ramirez said she is planning to install a surveillance camera and reopen the store within the next few days, with her daughter accompanying her while she is in the store for protection.

The march started at Our Lady of Solitude Catholic Church, stopped briefly at the bookstore and ended outside the offices of Rep. Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs. Protesters clutching white balloons shouted "Mary Bono out" and its Spanish-language equivalent, "Fuera Mary Bono."

Mario Lazcano, an organizer of the march, said in Spanish that Bono was targeted because her co-sponsorship of legislation that would criminalize undocumented immigrants "unleashed" an atmosphere that made the incident at the bookstore more likely.

Bono's Democratic opponent in the November elections, David Roth, spoke to the crowd at the church and marched part of the way. He said he participated because "politics in my mind is about bringing together our communities, not sowing hate as my opponent has done, not dividing people as my opponent has done."

Jason Vasquez, spokesman for Bono, could not be reached in Washington, D.C., late Thursday to respond to Roth's allegation. Earlier on Thursday, he declined to respond to Lazcano's comments, except to say, "The congresswoman always welcomes the opinions of her constituents."

Several protesters called on Palm Springs police to investigate the bookstore occurrence as a "hate crime." Sgt. Mitch Spike said police looked into the matter and determined that, although the incident was "unfortunate," no law was broken.

Brian Levin, an attorney who directs the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, saw the video and called the comments made at the store legally protected "hate speech." He said posting the video on YouTube can help spur debate.

"It's a high-tech version of the town square," he said of YouTube.

Barbara O'Connor, director of the Institute for the Study of Politics and the Media at Sacramento state, agreed, pointing to the "comments and responses" section below each video.

"Anything that fosters dialogue is probably a good thing in politics," she said.

I want to start by saying that I do not leave comments at blogs that warn readers about all the OC rules and regulations for any one that dares leave a comment. It is my opinion that if you're such a big mouth to say antyhing about any issue, you should have the integrity to accept any kind of reaction coming your way. Usually, the bloggers that edit the comments left at their blogs make sure to delete all comments that make them look like idiots. This is why whenever I have to say something about what one of these bloggers posted, I do it here, at my blog.

So let us start.

I found one more post by someone that makes a lame attempt at excusing Israel's present terrorist attack on Lebanon; the conflict can not even been called a war, until today Lebanon's army has not responded to Israel's incursions.

What Joe Gandelman does is to post a link to a post at another blog, a post by a not so intelligent young man who happens to be a soldier, and since he is an US citizen and US citizens that happen to be soldiers are some sort of sacred cows, then they get to say whatever they want no matter how ignorant what they say actually is.

And this is what the poor misguided jarhead said:

I wonder what would happen in the United States if, say, Mexico began launching artillery rockets into Texas, if the images of destruction and death were coming not from Haifa, but from San Antonio? Would the left wing and the media be crying for moderation and peace talks? Would the world condemn us for taking the fight to them? Some would say that Israel is a contested territory, that hundreds of thousands of Muslims were forcibly removed from their homes, and for that reason, the analogy does not hold up. To those people I say you are wrong, because a large portion of Texas was once under the Mexican flag.

Lets take it a step further soldier.

How about this analogy:

Some fundamentalist militants (many of them were not even US citizens, and remember, at this blog we use the term American to refer to those born in the American continent, from Greenland to Argentina) decided to declare independence of Texas from Mexico.

They did not speak the language, they did not profess the country's religion and they did not care to abide by the land's law since the renegades wanted for Texas to be a land were slavery was allowed. So, the Mexican government decided to do then what Israel is doing today, attack the terrorists, smoke them out of a hole called El Alamo and destroy all the cities were they had support by the civilian population.

From the perspective you champion, what Santa Ana did was quite correct.

But from the US point of view, those who died at El Alamo were doing it because they believed in a dream of justice and freedom, despite the fact that they wanted to add a pro-slavery state to the South.

Too bad Santa Ana failed, and that what he did was not done in California when a group of terrorists attacked the governor's palace. Or in Hawaii, were another group of terrorists captured the palace and kidnapped the royal family.

Do you see it now, it is not as black and white as your daddy wants to make it look. But wait, I have something else to tell you. Do you remember this paragraph?

My point is this: Israel is a sovereign country. The Israelis have EVERY RIGHT to defend their own borders against foreign attackers. For decades they have endured the cowardly attacks of terrorists.

Poor little boy, since you know so little about history and you depend on conservative baboons for your education no one cared to tell you that Israel came to be thanks to the terrorist activities by a fundamentalist religious group called the Irgun. These terrorists cowardly attacked UN and Brittish outposts in what was known as the Palestinian Mandate, the bloodshed was so merciless that both the UN and England did all they could to get the hell out of there, leaving the Palestinians to deal with the violence-prone bunch.

One more thing, why don't you ask your daddy or one of your indoctrinators at the army about the attack by Israel to an US vessel in which scores of US sailors were killed?

Israeli troops pulled back from a Lebanese border town Saturday after a week of heavy fighting with Hezbollah guerrillas who hailed the retreat as a victory. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice returned to the Middle East to push a refined U.S. peace plan.

The Israeli pullback from the town of Bint Jbail appeared to be in preparation for a new incursion along a different part of the border zone. Hours later, troops and tanks massed farther to the east on the Israeli side of the frontier, Lebanese security officials said early Sunday. Hezbollah's TV station said clashes broke out between guerrillas and Israeli troops about 2 miles inside Lebanon, but the Israeli army could not immediately confirm the report.

Lebanese civilians were suffering the most from the fighting, which erupted after Hezbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid July 12. On Sunday, Israeli jets bombed the southern town of Qana, destroying several houses in which dozens of people were trapped, Lebanese media reported.

A day earlier, warplanes struck outside the market town of Nabatiyeh, crushing a house and killing a woman, her five children, and a man in a nearby house, Lebanese security officials said. In the southern port city of Tyre, volunteers buried 31 victims of the bombardment in a mass grave, among them a 1-day-old girl.

Israel made its closest strike to Hezbollah ally Syria yet. Warplanes hit the Lebanese side of a Syrian-Lebanese border crossing, forcing the closure of the main transit point for refugees fleeing and humanitarian aid entering Lebanon. Two more missiles hit the area early Sunday.

Diplomats said the United States again forced the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to water down its statement so that Israel was not openly criticised.

But the statement said: "The Security Council strongly deplores this loss of innocent lives and the killing of all civilians in the present conflict and requests the secretary general to report to it within one week on the circumstances of this tragic incident."

Qatar, which proposed the statement, had wanted to call the attack "deliberate" and to call for a ceasefire.

The statement said: "The Security Council expresses its concern at the threat of escalation of violence with further grave consequences for the humanitarian situation, calls for and end to violence, and underscores the urgency of securing a lasting, permanent and sustainable ceasefire.

The final statement was agreed after the United States announced that Israel has agreed to suspend its air attacks for 48 hours pending an investigation into the Qana bombing.

The 15-nation council met in emergency session at the demand of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora after the Israeli raid left 52 people dead, including at least 30 children.

"We must condemn this action in the strongest possible terms, and I appeal to you to do likewise," Annan told the council.

"I'm deeply dismayed that my earlier calls for immediate cessation of hostilities were not heard, with the result that innocent lives continue to be taken and innocent civilians continue to suffer," he said.

In Lebanon, where the deadlist attack of the 19-day-old conflict killed at least 52 people, more than half of them children, the government accused Israel of war crimes and crimes against humanity as thousands of demonstrators attacked the UN headquarters in Beirut.

The Bush administration on Sunday urged Israelis to avoid civilian casualties in the fighting in Lebanon and expressed sorrow about the deaths of at least 56 civilians in a village in southern Lebanon.

But the White House reaffirmed the administration's insistence on reaching a sustainable cease-fire. "The key here is that we want a cease-fire that will work," press secretary Tony Snow told reporters. President Bush was told before 7 a.m. about the attack on Qana and had spoken with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who was in Jerusalem.

The administration offered condolences to those killed when Israeli missiles hit several buildings as people slept.

"This was a terrible and tragic incident," spokesman Blair Jones said. "We continue to urge the Israeli government to exercise the utmost care so as to avoid any civilian casualties. This tragic incident shows why this is so critical."

The State Department's third-ranking official reaffirmed the White House's position that Israel has the right to defend itself and contended an agreement was near on ending the fighting that has ravaged Lebanon.

Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns expressed optimism despite the airstrike. After the attack, Rice canceled a visit to meet with Lebanon's prime minister and, according to a U.S. official, decided to meet with the Israeli prime minister before leaving Jerusalem and returning to Washington on Monday.

Burns said the U.S. was committed to securing a cease-fire between Israelis and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, focusing on a multinational force in the region. Snow said talks at the United Nations about troop contributions would not begin until Tuesday or Wednesday.

"This is a very sad day. We are working toward that cease-fire," Burns said. "We are close to a political agreement between Israel and Lebanon to end this fighting."

Yet he endorsed Israel's military objectives, saying "This has not been a good 2 1/2 weeks for Hezbollah from a military point of view, and they've got to be worried about continued Israeli offensive operations."

The Mediterranean is threatened by its worst ever environmental disaster after Israel's bombing of a power plant in Lebanon sent thousands of tonnes of fuel gushing into the sea, the environment minister charged.

"Up until now 10,000-15,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil have spilled out into the sea," after Israel's bombing of the power station in Jiyeh two weeks ago, Lebanese Environment Minister Yacub Sarraf told AFP Saturday.

"It's without doubt the biggest environmental catastrophe that the Mediterranean has known and it risks having terrible consequences not only for our country but for all the countries of the eastern Mediterranean."

Israeli forces bombed the tanks at the power station on July 14 and July 15, just days into their offensive on Lebanon which has seen blistering air strikes across the country and a bloody ground incursion in the south.

The leak from one of the tanks, which are located just 25 metres (80 feet) from the sea, has now stopped but another containing 25,000 tonnes of fuel oil is still on fire and is in danger of exploding. Between 8,000-10,000 tonnes of fuel are on the shore and 5,000 on the open water.

"Until now, the worst ecological disasters have taken place in the oceans and it's the first time that an oil spill has happened outside the open sea," said Sarraf. "We can have no illusions."

Sarraf said that the cost of cleaning up Lebanon's once golden beaches -- which until the bombardment were major attractions for locals and tourists -- will cost between 45-50 million dollars and would not be finished until next summer.

The spill is now affecting 70 kilometres (40 miles) of Lebanon's 220-kilometre-long (140 miles) coast, a third of its coastline. Beaches and rocks are covered in a black sludge which has reached the famous tourist town of Byblos, north of Beirut.

"If nothing is done, not only will currents flowing towards the north mean that one third of Lebanon's coastline be hit, but also Cyprus, Syria, Turkey, Greece and even Israel," Sarraf said.

"The fauna and the Mediterranean ecosystem risk suffering badly and certain species are threatened with extinction," he warned.

Sarraf said that owing to the Israeli blockade of Lebanon's waters, it was impossible to send ships to clear up the pollution.

"I have appealed to Britain, Italy, Spain, the United States, all the countries which have already suffered oil slicks to ask for technical assistance as we cannot act on our own," he said.

Kuwait has sent 40 tonnes of material that would allow the petrol to thicken and also special carpets which absorb petroleum products.

A resident of Byblos, known worldwide for its seafood restaurants and historic harbour, said "for the last four days, fish, crustaceans and crabs have been coming in black, and they are dying as victims of this oil slick."

Fuad Hamdan, director of Friends of the Earth, Europe, and founder of Greenpeace Lebanon, agreed that "it is certainly the worst environmental disaster ever on the eastern Mediterranean coast."

Hamdan said the eastern Mediterranean coast from the Israeli port of Haifa until Syria's Lattakiya was already heavily polluted from Israeli industry, Lebanese sewage and industry from east Beirut and from Syria.

He advised people against eating fish from coastal areas. "Anyway it will smell bad and put people off."

Besides the oil slick, the fire from the oil tanks has caused atmospheric pollution which has already reached Beirut. "Now the toxic cloud is stretching over a 30 kilometre distance," said Sarraf.

An Irish army officer in south Lebanon warned Israeli forces six times that its strikes threatened the lives of the four observers, Ireland's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

Lieutenant Colonel John Molloy, the chief U.N. liaison officer with Israel in south Lebanon, told the Israelis on six separate occasions "that their bombardment was endangering the lives of U.N. staff in south Lebanon," a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said.

"He warned: 'You have to address this problem or lives may be lost,"' the spokesman said.

In New York, Holl Lute and U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch Brown telephoned Israeli U.N. Ambassador Dan Gillerman and his deputy half a dozen times to convey the same message, U.N. officials said.

"The base is clearly marked, a well-known. well-established position for a generation," said a U.N, official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity.

The United Nations still wanted a joint investigation, as Annan requested, despite Olmert's decision to conduct a solely Israeli inquiry, the U.N. official said.

Seems like Olmert is taking his cues from reknown terrorist Menachem Begin's legacy.

During that visit, he condemned the killing and wounding of civilians by both sides and called Israel's offensive "disproportionate" and "a violation of international humanitarian law."

"I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN observer post in southern Lebanon that has killed two UN military observers, with two more feared dead," Annan said in a statement released in Rome.

French ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere, president of the UN Security Council for July, said: "We condemn this bombing on a UNIFIL position."

The attack on the UN post in the hilltop town of Khiam, once the site of an infamous Israeli jail but now a Hezbollah stronghold, came amid an intensive bombardment of the border area as Israeli troops advanced further into Lebanon.

One thing I would like to tell this useful idiot by the name of Jan Egeland is that if he knew anything about history he would understand that resistance movements are always protected by the civilian population during a conflict, that is why the Nazis to name an example, carried out some infamous operations in Czechoslovaquia and Russia during WWII, since they could not get the resitance fighters, they would punish entire towns, which is exactly what Israel is doing by bombing Beirut.

What the Nazis tried to do then was to weaken the local support by terrorizing the inhabitants of the cities and towns nearby the areas were the resitance groups acted. The resistance groups did not have the weaponry nor the resources to go face to face with the Nazi army, that is why they had to hit and run, use whatever means they have to try to bring some balance to the fight. A couple of days ago I went to see the movie Merry Christmas, an excellent film that tells us about the crazyness of war.

To achieve this, those on top start by poisoning the minds of the country's young ones, this is why during the first few minutes of Merry Christmas we get to see a German boy, a French boy and an English boy reciting the propaganda they are tought about why one has to hate the neighbor.

House rejects changes to Voting Rights Act

The House voted Thursday to renew the 1965 Voting Rights Act, rejecting efforts by Southern conservatives to relax federal oversight of their states in a debate haunted by the ghosts of the civil rights movement.

The 390-33 vote sent to the Senate a bill that represented a Republican appeal to minority voters who doubt the GOP's "big-tent" image. Southern conservatives had complained that the act punishes their states for racist voting histories they say they've overcome.

"By passing this rewrite of the Voting Rights Act, Congress is declaring from on high that states with voting problems 40 years ago can simply never be forgiven," said Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., one of several lawmakers pressing for changes to the law to ease its requirements on Southern states.

The House overwhelmingly rejected amendments that would have shortened the renewal from 25 years to a decade and would have struck its requirement that ballots in some states be printed in several languages.

Supporters of the law as written called the amendments "poison pills" designed to kill the renewal because if any were adopted by the full House, the underlying renewal might have failed.

Supporters used stark images and emotional language to make clear that the pain of racial struggle — and racist voting practices — still stings.

Yes, what you just read is for real, the right to vote by the Black population of the United States of America (...the land of the free and the home of the brave...) depends on an Act, not a Law, that needs to be renewed every so often.

There you have it, a country that claims to be the most perfect democracy in the world, so perfect that they even export it via intelligent bombs, in reality keeps little over 10% of its population on a separate class when it comes to the right of all citizens to vote and be voted.

The note seems to present the Southern politicians as the villains in this movie, but the truth is, the entire US political landscape in guilty of racism by perpetuating a practice that can only be compared to the apartheid regime in South Africa.

The only way this blatant display of bigotry can be fixed is by making this Act evolve into a Law, so the Black population do not depend on a renewal to retain their right to vote.

Until then, the USA will not fully overcome its centuries of disregard for the human rights and civil liberties of its Black population, first victims of slavery, then victims of open racism, today victims of low key discrimination.

Not so low key at times, isn't it Mr. Beck?

I got acquainted with Pink Floyd when I was 8 or 9. I was mesmerized by the cover of "Dark Side of the Moon" so, one day, when my older brother and my mom left the house, I played the LP. I was immediatly drawn in by the music, but I did not understand the lyrics, since they were in English and I did not speak the language at the time.

Later, when I was 11, one of my Junior High teachers translated some of the lyrics for us. That was it. I have been a Pink Floyd fan since then. Viewing the movie "The Wall" was another rite of passage.

Extrangely enough, I did not learn about Syd Barrett until I was in college, when a Pink Floyd freak told me all about the band, and about Syd, and about how "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall" were heavily influenced by Roger Waters pain over Syd's situation.

Somehow, learning about his departure gave me the blues.

Syd Barrett, founder of Pink Floyd, dies

Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

The spokeswoman — who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement — confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death.

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and wrote many of the band's early songs.

He got the name of the band from two old blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Pink Floyd's jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene. It was the first British group to do light shows in concert and its music and style was weird even for that era.

The 1967 album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" — largely written by Barrett — was a commercial and critical hit. The group, with additional band members Nick Mason and Richard Wright, came to be known as England's premier acid rockers.

But the band did a turn for the worse when Barrett became mentally unstable from the pressures of drugs and fame and had to leave the band in 1968 — five years before Pink Floyd's most popular album, "Dark Side of the Moon."

Barrett spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge.

Guitarist David Gilmour, another Cambridge student, took Barrett's place.

A small, private funeral would be held, the spokeswoman said.

This is not a post about the institution where the United States of America forms the most heartless and ruthless Latin American military and para-military thugs.

This is a post about José Rivera's play that explores the last hours of Ernesto Guevara. The article tells us that Rivera does that while addressing a modern day issue, that of the war in Iraq.

Towards the very end of the article José Rivera tells us that his daughter was victim of harassment by a teacher who called Che a terrorist. This is just to show you how messed up things are in the USA where a murderous president like George W. Bush shelters a cold blooded assasin like Luis Posadas Carriles but a rather ignorant teacher feels that he has the right to openly attack an student while demonizing an individual that died fighting people who though it was their rights to rape and rob every country in the so called Third World.

Maybe that teacher should take into consideration that the White House has been terrorizing the civilian population of Afghanistan and Iraq for almost five years, and that George W. Bush and his henchmen have their hands splattered with the blood of innocent people who they murdered only to get more oil profits.

I would like to tell Claudia Parsons that Che is hero to millions, and devil to a few gusanos (right wing Cubans) and their US ideological puppets.

Kudos to José Rivera for his brave portrayal of Che.

Che Guevara's last night alive relived on NY stage

After writing "The Motorcycle Diaries" screenplay, Jose Rivera felt he had more to say about Ernesto "Che" Guevara, so he wrote a play he says shows the Latin American revolutionary would have had plenty to say about the war in Iraq.

"When you're in a situation where you're killing people and no one really knows why, the times require someone to ask those questions," Rivera said in an interview in New York, where his new play, "School of the Americas," opens on Thursday.

"Che was always asking those questions and criticizing U.S. imperialistic impulses all over the world," he said.

Rivera, a Puerto Rican raised in New York, said some of the dialogue speaks directly to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

"The things that Che says in the play are things that people feel around the world. Che said in the 1960s the greatest enemy of mankind is the United States, and there would be people who say that today," he said.

The play is the story of Guevara's last night before his death in Bolivia, where he spent the final year of his life trying to foment a communist uprising. The Argentine guerrilla, a key figure in Cuba's revolution, was captured by government troops and held in a village schoolhouse while the Bolivian and U.S. governments decided his fate.

A schoolteacher named Julia Cortes insisted on being allowed to visit him and befriended him.

Rivera said he came across her story while doing research for "The Motorcycle Diaries," the 2004 film about the young Guevara's transformative journey through Latin America with a friend. Cortes, now in her 70s, was interviewed for a Swiss documentary Rivera came across.

"I was very taken with her presence. She talked about meeting Che and what they talked about, and I had this feeling that it really changed her life," Rivera said. "I started to imagine this story of Che's last friendship."

HERO TO SOME, 'DEVIL' TO OTHERS

Rivera said he imagined the conversations in the play that range in subject from Guevara's marriage and children, to his mother's influence, his ideals and philosophy, as well as some doubts about the path he took in his final years.

"In several interviews Julia talks about the kinds of things they talked about but it's all very sketchy," Rivera said, adding that since writing the play he had spoken to Cortes, tracked down in Bolivia by a relative of Patricia Velasquez, the Venezuelan actress who plays Cortes.

"Patricia was able to have a phone conversation with her and they arranged for Julia to go to a cyber-cafe and we had a cyber conversation over the Internet with the whole cast."

"No one knows but her really what happened in that room," Rivera added.

Rivera, who was nominated for an Oscar for "The Motorcycle Diaries," was 13 when Guevara was killed in 1967 and he remembers it well. "He was a big hero with my family."

"That was the time period when Martin Luther King was killed and Bobby Kennedy was killed and Malcolm X was killed, so it seemed to be part of the times that all our heroes were being killed one by one," Rivera said.

He said Guevara was as controversial a figure at that time as he is today -- "a devil" for many expatriate Cubans and critics of Fidel Castro's communist revolution; a handsome, idealistic and charismatic cult figure for "60s college kids" and many leftists, particularly in Europe.

"My daughter wore a Che T-shirt to school and she was criticized by one of the teachers saying 'He's a terrorist,' and 'Why would you glorify a terrorist?'," Rivera said, adding that he does not expect to take the new play to Miami.

THOUSANDS of people, led by masked Zapatista leader "Subcommandante" Marcos, took to the streets of Mexico City overnight, claiming the elections that were under way did not offer a real solution in a country where millions live in poverty.

"Our ideas of justice and liberty are bigger than the ballot boxes," the protesters chanted as they marched to Mexico City's historic downtown Zocalo square, where hundreds of people lined up to vote.
Some 71 million Mexicans were called to cast ballots overnight in an election that will determine whether the Latin American country will maintain a conservative course or elect a leftist president.

"We want to demonstrate that there is an alternative to the ballot box," said Maria Fernandez, a militant of the Zapatista movement, which rose up in arms in the impoverished southern state of Chiapas in on January 1, 1994. The insurgency left 150 people dead before a ceasefire was declared 12 days later fighting.

The small but well publicised guerrilla army has now essentially become a political movement that regroups several indigenous and peasant organisations as well radical leftist militants.

"We are tired and outraged by this political circus. We don't want to legitimize the electoral process by taking part," said Ms Fernandez, as thousands of demonstrators swayed to a fast drumbeat.

The march was led by the iconic "Subcomandante" Marcos, clad in army fatigues, smoking a pipe and wearing his trademark black ski mask.

On January 1, Marcos led a so-called "other campaign," touring Mexico in a bid to launch a radical alternative to the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), which he claims has betrayed leftist ideals and does not truly represent impoverished Mexicans who make up about half the 103 million population.

Since March he has been in San Salvador Atenco to show solidarity with social movements who engaged in violent clashes with police in the small town just east of Mexico City.

The protests led to the scrapping of plans to build a new international airport in 2001. Two months ago, demonstrators protesting a crackdown on street vendors, again clashed with security forces. Two people died, several others were injured and dozens were arrested.

Demonstrators on Sunday demanded the release of about 20 protesters who are still in detention.

In San Salvador Atenco, a handful of militants staged a small protest Sunday, but drew little attention from voters.

"I want the government to resolve the issues through dialogue and stop the violence," Ema Esponoza, 54, said after she cast her ballot in the small town, adding that she expected the same of the organizers of the protests that ended in bloody clashes with police.

Until he was exposed as a pain killer abuser, then he begged for pardon and implored for understanding, two commodities he never bestowed upon the victims of his personal crusade in behalf of the good ol' "American values".

It should not come as a surprise that he was busted breaking the law again, and that the reason for all his rage may be in a dysfunction that can be "fixed" by a blue little pill.

Rush Limbaugh detained in Florida over Viagra pills

Right-wing U.S. radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, a one-time target of a prescription fraud investigation, was detained at a Florida airport when agents found a bottle of Viagra in his luggage that was not prescribed in his name, police said on Tuesday.

Under Florida law certain prescription drugs, including Pfizer's erectile dysfunction remedy Viagra, must bear the name of the person carrying them. Violation is a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by a $500 fine and 60 days in jail.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Limbaugh was detained for nearly four hours but was not arrested or charged. Details of the case were passed on to the local state attorney's office for possible prosecution.

Limbaugh was returning from the Dominican Republic, according to the police spokesman. He did not know if Limbaugh was with companions.

The incident marks the latest legal trouble for the controversial and often moralistic radio talk show host, who admitted in October 2003 that he was addicted to painkillers.

Limbaugh made the admission after published reports that he was facing an investigation for allegedly using a housekeeper at his Palm Beach mansion to illegally obtain prescription drugs.

Limbaugh struck a deal with prosecutors in April to end a lengthy investigation into whether he also "doctor shopped" -- using different doctors at the same time to get large quantities of painkillers.

Under the deal, Limbaugh was booked on a single count of concealing information to fraudulently obtain a prescription drug. Prosecutors agreed to drop the charge in 18 months if Limbaugh continued to seek drug therapy treatment, his lawyer said.

Limbaugh was stopped on Monday at Palm Beach County International Airport after arriving on a private plane. Customs officers found a bottle containing 29 blue tablets in his luggage, Palm Beach Sheriff's Sgt. Pete Palenzuela said.

"The prescription label had two doctors' names on it and did not have Mr. Limbaugh's name on it," he said. "Mr. Limbaugh said the Viagra was his and was for his personal use."

It was not clear if the incident will affect the deal struck in April. His attorney, Roy Black, was not immediately available for comment.

"Rush Limbaugh was detained by customs agents after they noticed a non-narcotic prescription drug, which had been prescribed by Mr. Limbaugh's treating physician but labeled as being issued to the physician rather than Mr. Limbaugh for privacy purposes," Black said in a written statement.

The excuse for the Zionist hawks to put in danger the lives of thousands of Palestinian civilians is the rescue of an Israeli soldier captured earlier this week by Palestinian resistance forces.

For some odd reason, the media is calling the capture of a soldier who happens to be a member of an occupation army engaged in a land grab operation against a nation recognized by the United Nations by the term of kidnapping.

They even quote the soldier's father Noam Shalit as saying: "his son as a quiet, introverted boy whose greatest pleasure is helping others".

With all due respect to Mr. Shalit, but a quiet, introverted person who finds pleasure in helping others would never enlist in an armed force that is known around the world for its several acts of brutality against a helpless society.

What about that wall of shame, is that what you would call a quiet way to help others?

Nobody knows how many women and children will be murdered in this attack, which by the way is in open violation to the Geneva Convention, nor how many men will be beaten, tortured and killed just to avenge a casualty of war.

And it happened today, when the Palestinian government had recognized just hours before the existence of Israel as demanded by Washington and a number of European powers.

And to think that someone once said... never again.

Che Guevara: an image that keeps the spirit of revolution alive

A new exhibition at the V&A explores the significance of Che Guevara’s image, writes Tim Sanders
The handsome face with the far away gaze stares down from posters on streets and bedroom walls all over the world, more recognisable perhaps than fellow beardie Jesus Christ.

Che Guevara’s image has become an international icon, a product with instant brand recognition, now safely divorced from its revolutionary beginnings.

That is, I suspect, at least in part, the thinking behind the V&A museum’s decision to mount this exhibition. If that was their intention they have only been partly successful.

The exhibition focuses entirely on the legendary photograph of Che by Alberto Korda, Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s official photographer. This was taken in 1960 at a state funeral for dozens of Cubans killed in an explosion of a ship carrying munitions, which Castro claimed was a terrorist attack carried out by the CIA.

It seems incredible that a shot taken at such an event, so distant from the centres of power and cultural influence, could come to have such significance in the imagination of the world. It has inspired art, fashion and photography for more than 40 years.

The image has been used and abused, appropriated by the very powers Che dedicated his life to destroying. So now Che’s image, if not his ideas, is welcome at the V&A, a museum of the British establishment that is stuffed with the booty of imperial plunder.

‘The critical response to the show has been universally postmodern in tone, accepting and endorsing the idea that this is an image so drained of meaning that it is nothing more than an advertiser’s gimmick.

The distance between this cultural object and Che’s beliefs is now so great that most people who put on a Che T-shirt can know nothing of the ideology or politics that inspired the real man.

They are merely tuning into the hip rebelliousness that attracted designer Jean Paul Gaultier and vodka manufacturers Smirnoff – though Korda successfully sued Smirnoff for misuse of his image.

This attitude is well summed up by the Argentine business analyst Martin Krauze. He said, “The admiration for El Che no longer extends to his politics and ideology. It’s a romantic idea of one man going to battle against the windmills, he’s a Quixote.”

British journalist Sean O’Hagan said Che was “more Lennon than Lenin”.

This view is very patronising towards Che T-shirt wearers, but it also represents wishful thinking on the part of the ruling class. While it’s true that many young people may not know much about Che, there are an awful lot of people who are very well aware of the meaning behind the face.

Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman said, “Deep inside that T-shirt where we have tried to trap him, the eyes of Che Guevara are still burning with impatience.”

It’s not for nothing that the reappearance of Che’s face on T-shirts has coincided with the growth of the anti- capitalist and anti-war movements.

The Mexican commentator Jorge Castaneda wrote, “Che can be found just where he belongs in the niches reserved for cultural icons, for symbols of social uprisings that filter down deep into the soil of society.”

The power of this image ultimately comes from the fact that Che was a genuine revolutionary, a fighter against capitalism and injustice. It is this authenticity that gives the image its force and is the one thing the image makers cannot hope to manufacture.

It is Che’s legitimate revolutionary credentials that give this photo its iconic status. This is why Che’s image is found all over the world – especially in places where there is resistance to the neo-liberal assault. This doesn’t come across entirely successfully in the exhibition as too much is left unsaid.

This may have been an attempt to avoid preaching but makes the show seem slightly shallow. The show is testimony to the enduring power of Che. And when did you ever see a Tony Blair T-shirt?

Let Us Destroy Other Planets!

I really don't know why this Hawking guy is so respected.

Until now, his amazing IQ has done nothing to help humankind, all his theories can not be proved because only if we were capable of travelling through time and/or at the speed of light could we ever find out if he was right or wrong.

Well, now he has fueled some of the most wacky End of the World sects out there. He claims that humans must colonize other planets if we want to survive. He says that the Earth is on the brink of not being able to provide us with the elements for our species to prevail.

But he does not tell us exactly how can we go out there and colonize planets with life sustaining atmospheres, no, he simply tells us to go to the Moon and Mars, where there is nothing but rocks and dust.

Even worst, he tell us that we need to do this because "we are at risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as:

a) sudden global warming,
b) nuclear war,
c) a genetically engineered virus
d) or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

Well well well, if he really believes in the first three worst case scenarios, then he should be asking for George W. Bush to be removed from office. The fourth case scenario is for Doomsday believers, or people that went to see "Armaggedon" and cried when Bruce Willis said goodbye to the Tyler girl.

So, while Mr. Hawking is out ther making millions by spreading fear as to secure funds for NASA, we are left with a world where the police detains 40 people for defending a garden in the middle of concrete warehouses or where the Israeli government denies its involvement in the killing of three children on friday by murdering an equal number of children today with an air strike.

Congratulations Stephen, you are a real genious!

Hawking says space colonies needed

The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth, world-renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.

Humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years, the British scientist told a news conference.

"We won't find anywhere as nice as Earth unless we go to another star system," added Hawking, who arrived in Hong Kong to a rock star's welcome Monday. Tickets for his lecture planned for Wednesday were sold out.

He added that if humans can avoid killing themselves in the next 100 years, they should have space settlements that can continue without support from Earth.

"It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

The 64-year-old scientist — author of the global best seller "A Brief History of Time" — is wheelchair-bound and communicates with the help of a computer because he suffers from a neurological disorder called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

Hawking said he's teaming up with his daughter to write a children's book about the universe, aimed at the same age group as the Harry Potter books.

"It is a story for children, which explains the wonders of the universe," said his daughter, Lucy, a journalist and novelist. They didn't provide other details.
